Balconies as Thermal Carrier in Building

Balconies act as major source of energy inefficiency. Structural element required to support them can act as thermal bridges. It can reduce 25% of the total energy loss.

  • Identify your need:

If there is building issues arising due to energy transfer like energy loss, structural damage then there is need in reduction of thermal bridge.

  • Build in Fire protection:

Consider the level of fire safety specification for each building. Build as per the regional specifications. Balconies plays a major role for thermal safety.

  • Match the system with material:

Most important for designing balconies is to focus on material depending on the material the thermal bridging solutions varies. Some types of connections are concrete to concrete, steel to concrete, steel to steel.

  • Consider the structure:

Combining the structural element is most basic requirement accounting thermal bridging. The insulating material should be selected considering the strength and thermal efficiency as well.

If designing for the cold climate the building should not loose heat from interior to exterior. In hot climate it should be opposite. Heat shouldn’t flow from exterior to interior.
